The Area

The Village

The longevity of the Bulgarian people is put down to the locally made fresh yoghurt and fine wines are made in many areas of Bulgaria. In fact the earliest writings on making wine tell us that it was introduced to ancient Greece by the Thracians, (an early North Bulgarian people).

The village of Tserova Koriya, (which means the valley of theOak Trees) is only small, quiet, rural community but it sometimes appears that time has stood still here. Chickens, as well as cats and dogs, meander along its roads and lanes. The sound of donkeys, turkeys and cockerels, try to spoil the peacefulness and then in the evening, the sheep and goats return from pasture and fall out of line to go to their own home without any human supervision, "Mom I'm home".

There are food shops scattered around the village and at the centre of the village is a large open square. Here you can find the Church, the Mayors office, the pub, a few shops and the Post Office. The people here are very friendly and helpful as are most Bulgarians and you may get invited into their homes, (don’t forget to take your shoes off at the door) to sample their home made wines or Rakia.

Beauty and nature abound around the village, its an ideal place for bird watching and although we are not keen bird watchers, we have seen eagles, storks and woodpeckers locally, (a woodpecker visits our pear tree regularly. Walking, mountain biking, studying nature, nature photography or just relaxing and sun bathing are all wonderful pastimes that are pursued here. Or at the other end of the village is a fishing lake, where you can very cheaply spend the day pursuing your favourite hobby. There are also other fishing venues quite close, or maybe you would prefer to go horse riding locally.

Pottery

In the nearby village of Merdanya, there is a ceramic studio which is run by Nadia Alexsandrova and her family. They have a showroom, to view and buy their fantastic hand crafted wares, you can also see them being made and even have a go at making one yourself.

Of extra interest, we can arrange for you to visit the studio by horse and carriage at very good rates and also we can arrange for you to have a traditional meal there, excellent quality !!!

Lyaskovets

Lyaskovets is a small nearby town, just off the Sofia-Varna main road. It boasts a large swimming pool complex where you can have a picnic and spend the whole day relaxing. Near the centre of town is a Horticultural Museum and there is also a winery, which offers tours for those interested. Perched on the top of the hill for all to see, is the Monastery of St Peter and St Paul. A walk around the gardens gives a feeling of solitude and the views are fantastic.

Gorna

A large industrial town, close to Lyaskovets. It is a transportation centre for the whole area, being one of the major railway stations in Bulgaria, with trains running North/South (the train from Rumania to Turkey stops here) and East/West. It has a large bus station, and an airport which is currently used for freight, but we hope it will be turned into a passenger terminal in the near future. In the centre of town, is a very large fruit and meat market, selling produce that has just been picked locally and a central square with many shops and restaurants.
